What is the Pupil Premium Grant?

The Pupil Premium Grant is funding provided to schools each year by the Government to improve attainment of disadvantaged children. Research shows that, typically, children from low income families perform less well at school than their peers; facing challenges such as poor language and communication skills, less family support, lack of confidence and issues with attendance and punctuality. Pupil Premium is intended to directly support the educational achievement of these children, helping to narrow the gap between them and their classmates.

The Pupil Premium funding is allocated to schools based on the numbers of children who:

• are registered for free school meals;
• have been registered for free school meals at any point in the last six years;
• are, or have been, in care;
• have a parent/s in the armed forces.

Accountability & use of funding

All schools will be held accountable for how they have used the Pupil Premium funding and the impact it has had on the children’s learning and we are required to publish online information about how we have used the Premium.

Schools are free to decide how to use their Pupil Premium allocation as it is recognised that they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for individual pupils. Alongside our own professional knowledge and understanding of the children, we also consider advice from outside agencies together with findings and recommendations from recent research when deciding the most effective strategies to use. Evidence suggests that pupil premium spending is most effective when used across the following 3 areas:

• High-quality teaching, such as staff professional development
• Targeted academic support
• Wider strategies to address non-academic barriers to success in schools (e.g. attendance, behaviour and social and emotional support)

Our school works very hard to narrow the academic gap between those pupils entitled to the funding and those not entitled. We continue to strive to increase the achievement of our Pupil Premium children.
